The UEFA Champions League knock-out stages are around the corner as the top 16 teams in Europe are gearing up to battle it out for continental glory.
The 2021/22 Champions League round of 16 kicks off on February 16 (ISt) with the big-ticket clash between Real Madrid and Paris Saint-German (PSG) and in another game on the same day, last season’s finalists Manchester City take on Sporting Lisbon.
Champions League knock-out stages are always high-pressure situations and it takes really good players to help a club cross the hurdles Europe’s elite club competition present at this stage.
Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo is the all-time highest goalscorer in the Champions League with 140 goals in 181 appearances. Out of those 141 goals, 67 came in the knock-out stages of the tournament in 80 appearances, which is also a record.
Ronaldo is closely followed by his rival Lionel Messi who has a total of 125 goals in 154 appearances and has netted 49 times in the knock-out stages.
After Ronaldo and Messi comes the Bayern Munich duo of Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller who have scored 26 and 24 goals respectively in the knock-outs and 82 and 50 goals respectively overall.
The other active player who features in the list of highest goalscorers in UCL knockouts is Ronaldo’s former Real Madrid teammates Karim Benzema.
