Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is reportedly interested in signing Barcelona midfielder Gavi and is growing confident of securing a cut-price deal. If the 17-year-old was to join, it would likely see the Reds offload at least two other midfielders.

Liverpool have already got a stacked midfield with competition for places fierce.

Gavi, who has played a significant role for Barcelona this season, playing 18 games in LaLiga, would bolster Klopp’s options further if he was to join in the summer.

Despite already boasting a midfield with the likes of Fabinho and Thiago, Klopp is said to be a huge admirer on Gavi and is keen to bring him into his squad.

Gavi has just 18 months left on his contract and his current agreement means he has a release clause of around just £42million.

Mundo Deportivo report that Klopp is pushing Liverpool’s drive to sign Gavi, who has also attracted interest from a number of other European powerhouses, including Chelsea.

The report states that Barcelona still expect Gavi to stay at the club, although there is a ‘nagging feeling’ that Liverpool’s persistence is beginning to bring fear.

The Catalan giants plan to do everything in their power to extend his contract but Liverpool are not going to give up lightly.

If there persistence was to pay off, Klopp will undoubtedly want to get rid of at least two players to trim his midfield down.

James Milner is one likely to leave the club in the summer, with the veteran’s deal coming to an end and no extension talks pencilled in.

As well as Fabinho and Thiago, Liverpool also have the luxury of calling on the likes of Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita, Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliot and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to play in the central-midfield role.

Who else could leave the club to make way for Gavi is not certain, though Oxlade-Chamberlain and Keita are the obvious candidates.

The pair enter the final 12 months of their deals at the end of the season and have been in and out of the side all campaign.

If Gavi is signed up, Liverpool will likely want to get a fee for either Oxlade-Chamberlain or Keita while they still can. The duo don’t appear to be in Liverpool’s long-term plans and would most likely be open to the idea of leaving if minutes ended up even harder to come by.
