Tottenham manager Antonio Conte looks set for more frustration when it comes to Tanguy Ndombele, with Lyon laying out the chances of making his loan move permanent. The Frenchman had fallen out of favour with just about everyone at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium by the time of his departure last month.

Tottenham eclipsed their transfer record in 2019 to sign Ndombele from Lyon in a deal that could reach £63million

The midfielder got off to a superb start, scoring against Aston Villa on his debut, but goals proved hard to come by thereafter, and he struggled to win over fans with his fitness and work-rate issues.

That frustration came to a head when Conte took charge in November last year, and Ndombele quickly tumbled down the pecking order under the Italian.

Last month, the 25-year-old was booed against League One Morecambe for jogging off the pitch after another lacklustre performance.

“We had to discuss with the president of Tottenham who bought him very expensive.

“He participated in the commitment to return by investing himself personally.

“We have to let a few games pass, it’s only the beginning… but if we win the Europa League, everything will be possible.”

While it is certainly a tall order from Aulas, Lyon stormed through the group stage with the highest points total of any side in the competition.

It remains to be seen who they draw after the conclusion of the knockout round play-offs, but failure to win the Europa League could land Spurs with a real headache in their attempts to clear space on the wage bill.

As a high earner and someone who could still command a healthy transfer fee, Ndombele’s permanent exit could be crucial in allowing Conte to recruit extensively at the end of the season.

The former Inter Milan boss described last month’s window as ‘very strange‘ and had to settle for numerous departures before bringing in two players of his own.

If Lyon fall short of their Europa League goal, Conte and co may have to rely on a series of impressive performances from Ndombele to tempt other clubs into submitting offers – although their £54m asking price may still prove too hefty for many.
