Antonio Conte says Tottenham’s new signings Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur will need time to “understand the intensity” of English football. Both players came off the bench to make their Spurs debuts in the 3-1 win over Brighton in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Saturday evening.

Kulusevski joined Spurs from Juventus on transfer deadline day on an initial 18-month loan until the end of the 2022/23 season.

Tottenham paid a loan fee of £8.35million (€10m) and the deal will automatically be made into a permanent one worth around £33.2m (€40m) if the 21-year-old winger hits certain performance criteria.

Bentancur, 24, signed on a four-and-a-half-year permanent deal from Juve worth an initial £15.8m, with a further £5.7m due in potential add-ons.

Both former Juventus players got their first taste of action as Conte introduced them from the bench when the score was already at 3-1, following two goals from Harry Kane and a Solly March own goal.

“I think they can help us. I’m pleased that I gave them the opportunity to come in and also breathe this fantastic atmosphere in our stadium.”

It was a good night for Spurs, who dominated the game and went 2-0 up through Kane’s curler and March’s unfortunate own goal from Emerson Royal’s cross.

Yves Bissouma pulled a goal back with a deflected strike before Kane slid in to convert Son Heung-min’s deflected effort and make the game safe in the 66th minute.

While they only made cameos against Brighton, both Kulusevski and Bentancur are likely to see more action soon, with Spurs playing Southampton on Wednesday and Wolves on Sunday as the Premier League returns.

“It was important for the new signings to come in and to understand very well that this league is very difficult,” Conte added.

“When you come here from another league you need a bit of time to understand the intensity and understand that here the difficulty is very high.

“For me, tonight to give them the possibility to come in and play for 20-25 minutes was important for Kulusevski and Bentancur. I repeat, two good signings for us and they can help us for the rest of the season.

“Now start the second part of the season and I think with these two new signings we are more complete as a squad.”
