Tottenham manager Antonio Conte insists they cannot be complacent in the top-four fight after a morale-boosting defeat of champions Manchester City away from home – but has talked up the Spurs squad as one of the best he’s ever coached. Conte recently gave an interview in Italian and the translations were seen as him criticising the depth of his squad and suggesting as if he was unhappy with the exits chairman Daniel Levy agreed in January.

Yet Conte was as eager post-match as he was in his pre-match press conference to stress that that was not the meaning of his words and that he has plenty of faith in his team.

Spurs responded to a run of three straight Premier League losses in spectacular style on Saturday night as they beat league leaders City 3-2 thanks to Harry Kane’s 95th minute header.

The visitors took the lead three times at the Etihad on the way to a huge three points which aids their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League after a miserable run of form.

But Conte has implored his side to knuckle down and focus on the next match with a tricky trip to relegation-battling Burnley, who beat Brighton 3-0 on Saturday, in midweek.

The Italian told Sky Sports: “It was an emotional game for sure. It was an exciting game. We played a good game. We followed a plan.

“I spoke before the game and said for sure Manchester City would keep possession of the ball for 65 to 70 minutes in the game. So we needed to be good tactically in a defensive way.

“But even when defending our first thought was to attack. We did. We created chances and scored good goals against a fantastic team, a wonderful team. A good win for us.

“This win will give us more confidence. It wasn’t simple to play Manchester City after three losses in a row. But I’m continuing to say the same thing, this is a process, we are working very hard to improve aspect.

“We have a lot of space for improvement. This group of players is fantastic and is one of the best I’ve worked with in my career. We have many, many young players to improve and gain experience. We have a lot of work to do but we’re not scared to work.”

Conte was understandably delighted by match-winner Kane’s performance, with his brace putting City – chasing a fourth title in the past five seasons – to the sword.

He added: “Harry is for sure an important player for us. In every game we’ve created chances to score and today our strikers played very well.

“Harry was very good at keeping the ball. I think the first goal was great because this goal is about our job and our work that we are doing every day. We did well.”

Spurs sit seventh but will have three games in hand on fourth-placed Manchester United after tomorrow and take on Burnley at Turf Moor on Wednesday night.
