Still shot of Man United’s embarrassing attempts to beat offside trap goes viral after Southampton

An altogether bizarre photo of a host of Manchester United’s stars trying and failing to beat the offside trap laid out by Southampton has gone viral on the back of the meeting between the clubs on Saturday.

Ralf Rangnick’s men of course marked their return to action a short time ago.

After seeing the club’s top-4 hopes dealt another blow in a 1-1 stalemate with Burnley in midweek, the Red Devils welcomed Ralph Hasenhuttl’s in-form Southampton to Old Trafford, hopeful of a bounce-back three points.

When all was said and done, however, the latest in a string of underwhelming displays ultimately saw United forced to settle for a share of the spoils.

The afternoon’s hosts did take the lead with 20 minutes on the clock, when Jadon Sancho rounded out a fine team move to bag his first Premier League goal at Old Trafford:

Southampton, however, soon worked their way into proceedings, to eventually bag a decisive equaliser courtesy of Che Adams early in the 2nd-half:

Reds’ offside efforts turn heads

On the back of the full-time whistle sounding in Manchester on Saturday, it should therefore come as little surprise to hear of a whole host of United’s stars being singled out for heavy criticism.

The likes of Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Cristiano Ronaldo have all come in for deserved condemnation, as the atmosphere continues to sour in Ralf Rangnick’s squad.

As alluded to above, though, it was one moment involving no fewer than six members of the Red Devils’ ranks which has gone altogether viral on the back of the action coming to a close at Old Trafford.

The moment in question came as a set-piece was whipped into the Southampton area during the 2nd-half of action.

The visiting Saints, for their part, employed a high line in a bid to deal with the delivery, stepping up to catch United’s stars offside.

And to say that such a ploy proved effective would be putting it lightly, with Paul Pogba, Harry Maguire, Marcus Rashford and more having all been caught several feet beyond the Southampton backline, giving rise to a remarkable still shot:
