Rio Ferdinand believes that Manchester United can still finish in the top four despite their lack of goalscoring prowess, citing the Gunners’ inability to outscore the Old Trafford side as their downfall.

Arsenal’s gutsy 1-0 win over Wolves on Thursday signalled their intentions in the race for Champions League football, with Mikel Arteta’s men edging ahead of United in the race for the top four.

The win leaves the Gunners just one point behind West Ham with two games in hand on their London rivals.

And after United’s slip up to Burnley at Turf Moor in midweek, it has rang alarm bells for Red Devils boss Ralf Rangnick.

The German manager aired his concerns at the lack of incisiveness United possess at the moment after the 1-1 draw in east Lancashire.

But speaking on Arsenal’s season, Ferdinand believed United would still finish ahead of Arteta’s men due to a lack of a top-class striker in north London.

“Goals,” Ferdinand declared as the problem.

“Aubameyang has gone, not that he was banging them in when he was there, but he was a big player, the captain.

“I like Mikel Arteta and what he’s trying to do there.

“Arsenal, great history, but in recent years, they have not shown you anything that will convince you that they’re going to be consistent enough to get into the top four.”

“But I spoke about it before: there is nobody fighting for the top-four, standing out as the outstanding candidate, the leading candidate, who can string five wins together or go unbeaten for ten games. None of them have proven that yet so it is up for grabs.

“None of the teams fighting in that area, Arsenal, West Ham, Man United and Spurs, especially, could sit here and say, ‘You know what, we’re feeling in the right frame of mind, we’re getting consistent results and performances to stake a claim’.

“I think they are looking at each other and going: ‘I don’t know what they’re going to do, and I don’t know what we’re going to do, either’. I think Man United will get there, I just think they’ll be able to get the goals to win the right amount of games to get into the top-four.”
