Red Star defender Cristiano Piccini thinks Rangers were one of the “worst” draws for the Serbian side in the Europa League last 16 but warned the Light Blues they’ll be an entirely different proposition the Borussia Dortmund.
The Gers booked their place in the last 16 with a 6-4 aggregate win but Piccini doesn’t expect a similar scoreline next month when Red Star take on Rangers for a place in the quarter-finals.
The Italian defender was left stunned as Rangers knocked out one of the favourites to win the Europa League, praising the “huge” performance over the two legs by Gio van Bronckhorst’s side.
“At this moment in the competition, any rival is dangerous,” Piccini said [Daily Record].
“But it’s clear that we’ve got one of the worst teams possible in Rangers because they are in such good form right now.
“I couldn’t believe they knocked Borussia Dortmund out in the last 16.
“That has demonstrated to me the huge level Rangers are at and this will not be a comfortable match for us.
“The key for us in these games will be to stop Rangers scoring because they are dangerous in attack, as they showed against Dortmund.
“But it’s not easy to score against us this season.
“So if we maintain a good score in Glasgow, it will increase our chances of winning at home.
“I don’t expect the same kind of game Rangers had against Dortmund with lots of goals. That is not our style of match.”
The Light Blues welcome Red Star to Ibrox on March 10 before the return leg in Belgrade a week later.
Last time the two sides met, a Nacho Novo goal was all that seperated them over two legs as Walter Smith’s side would qualify for the Champions League before going on to reach the UEFA Cup final in Manchester.
Here’s how we’ think the Rangers side will line-up against Motherwell at Ibrox this afternoon – has Aaron Ramsey made the cut?
