The race for the Premier League golden boot is one of the most hotly-contested events of the year, sorting the good players from the greats.
Harry Kane endured a stellar campaign last season to lift it for the third time – only Thierry Henry has won it more times – but faces an uphill task if he is to outscore some of his rivals following a slow start to the season.
Here 101 Great Goals looks at odds and tips for the 2021/22 Premier League golden boot, from which players are favourites to lift the treasured prize and who could run them close.
Golden boot favourites
Mo Salah is enjoying another incredible season in front of goal netting 16 in 22 league matches. The winger is averaging 0.76 goals per 90 minutes and he currently leads the competition by six goals. He will also have the fire in his belly following his AFCON final upset in which he lost on penalties with Eygpt. Salah is unsurprisingly the clear favourite to win the award at 1/3.
The Portuguese forward is the closest player to catching his teammate Mo Salah. Diogo Jota has netted 12 goals this campaign and become a crucial member of Klopp’s side, taking Roberto Firmino’s place in the line-up. The Portuguese forward netted twice against Leicester in midweek and is currently in cracking form. At 7/1 and just four goals behind Salah, he is one of the players expected to be up there by the end of the season.
Raheem Sterling is fantastic value to win the Golden Boot at 66/1 odds with the forward currently joint-second top scorer with 12 goals. Sterling gave his chances of claiming the award a huge boost over the weekend as he netted a hat-trick at Carrow Road. He is also becoming a key part of Pep Guardiola’s incredible Manchester City side. He has proven himself to be one of the men the Spaniard trusts the most having started in all of City’s last six league matches.
Golden boot challengers
Cristiano Ronaldo is currently on his longest goal drought since 2009, with the striker failing to score in his last six matches in all competitions. He is sitting on eight goals in total and it will take some doing for him to catch Salah, but if anyone can, it is Ronaldo. However, with Manchester United also out of form, the 37-year-old faces a real battle to shorten the current odds of 14/1.
Despite missing Leicester’s last six matches with a hamstring injury, Jamie Vardy remains the joint fourth-leading scorer with nine goals. However, the striker also remains around three weeks away from a return. His absence from the team has damaged his chances of claiming the award as reflected in odds of 33/1.
Harry Kane’s form in front of goal has once again taken a hit over recent weeks with the striker blanking in his last three league appearances. He remains on just five league goals for the season. Although whilst Spurs’ performances have been really poor, Kane still looks determined to make things happen and his determination could eventually pay off and see those odds of 25/1 cut.
Golden boot outsiders
Romelu Lukaku‘s return to England and Chelsea has been a very difficult one so far with just five league goals after 16 matches. Following a promising start to the season, the Belgian’s form has been curtailed over the last few months. The striker has had a number of issues to deal with since returning to Stamford Bridge including problems behind the scenes, injuries and illnesses. However, in the coming weeks, when he and Chelsea return from Dubai, he will be hoping to get back to his best but at 33/1 is probably too far away to be considered a serious contender.
Heung-min Son has once again proved to be a key player for Tottenham. The forward is up to nine league goals for the season so far despite an injury-hit campaign. However, Son has looked somewhat jaded in his last few matches since returning from injury and he is now out at 40/1 to win the award for the first time.
Sadio Mane has netted eight league goals in 21 appearances this season. Mane will be on a huge high right now having guided Senegal to their first-ever AFCON title. However, he returns from the tournament with 8 goals to make up on Salah and plenty of competition for his place in the side. He finds himself at 33/1 to win the golden boot.
