While the Reds have been elevated to a title-winning behemoth following the £75m signing of Virgil van Dijk, United remain entrenched in the mire of mediocrity despite splashing out £5m more on Maguire.
There is no denying the 28-year-old possesses an array of exceptional qualities required of a top centre-half, but his impact in Manchester has been nowhere near as influential as hoped.
For United, the Araujo affair poses quite the conundrum: do the Red Devils stand by Maguire in the hope he can rediscover his form, establish an all-conquering partnership with Varane and come good, or do they resign themselves to the fact the £80m transfer hasn’t gone to plan and look to the future with the alternative option of Araujo?
An interesting 18 months awaits them both.
