Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has been told his perceived lack of pace is an ‘issue’ for the Red Devils by former United striker Michael Owen. Maguire is enduring a poor period of form that has coincided with some disappointing results for his side.

The United captain struggled in their 1-1 draw with Southampton on Saturday.

It followed his mistake that led to Jay Rodriguez scoring for Burnley last week.

Maguire was given a tough time by on-loan Southampton forward Armando Broja at Old Trafford.

In one incident, the Chelsea star dribbled beyond Maguire with a clever shimmy, sending the former Leicester star the wrong way.

The centre-back then made a clumsy challenge on the Southampton striker as he tried to redeem himself.

Owen slammed the scenario as being ‘embarrassing’ for Maguire.

Analysing the clip, the former England man said: “I did fear for him and that [incident] was quite embarrassing.

“He’s got no pace at the best of times but he was outwitted there (by Broja).

Former United centre-back Rio Ferdinand felt Maguire was responsible.

“The goal was poor on Harry’s part,” the former Red Devils centre-back said.

“He will take responsibility for that. He needs to iron it out. Even the challenge he made over the halfway line. He’s lucky to have stayed on the pitch.”

He continued: “It’s a performance he won’t be happy with. I don’t know if it’s a hangover from the Euros, physically and mentally.”
