Manchester United put in another mixed performance as they drew 1-1 with Burnley on Tuesday night. Ralf Rangnick’s went into the game hoping to bounce back after losing to Middlesbrough in the FA Cup over the weekend. Yet that didn’t happen, with the Red Devils slumping to a disappointing stalemate at Turf Moor.

United saw two goals chalked off against Burnley by the officials.

Yet they finally took the lead through Paul Pogba, with the France international scoring on just his second start since returning from injury.

United were dominant in the first 45 minutes but, after the interval, it was a different story.

Jay Rodriguez, who has a long history of scoring against the Red Devils, equalised for Burnley and ended up earning his side a draw.

With United enduring yet another frustrating night at the office, Express Sport now takes a look at five players the Glazers should look to upgrade on when the transfer window reopens at the end of the campaign.

Harry Maguire

When United paid £80million to sign Harry Maguire back in 2019, they were convinced they were onto a winner.

However, nearly three full years on, and it would be no understatement to say the England international has been a disappointment.

United have invested a lot in Maguire, both financially and emotionally, having once believed he’d be the ideal heir to the likes of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.

He’s a capable defender but, often, not the world-class asset he can be for his country.

Maguire should have done better for Burnley’s leveller and Victor Lindelof, who cost less than half his price, is a safer option at the current moment in time when he’s fully fit and available.

Diogo Dalot

Diogo Dalot has fared well in recent weeks.

However, the Portugal international still seems only capable of either defending or attacking – and not both.

The ex-Porto and AC Milan star seemed wary of going forward against Burnley and leaving him exposed at the back.

Throw in the fact Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been dire this term, the Glazers certainly need to reinforce the club’s options at right-back.

They should have got Kieran Trippier when they had the chance, with the Newcastle star shining in his team’s 3-1 victory over Everton on Tuesday.

Scott McTominay

Like Dalot, Scott McTominay has been another good performer since Rangnick took charge.

Yet the brutal truth of the matter is that, overall, the Scotland international isn’t the complete package.

McTominay competed well physically, doing his best to stop Burnley winning the battle in the middle of the field.

However, he slowed United down when it came to attacking and his lack of intensity displeased Rangnick throughout the game.

Dean Saunders, doing punditry work for talkSPORT, thinks McTominay is one of the worst midfielders Cristiano Ronaldo has played with during his glittering career.

Edinson Cavani and Cristiano Ronaldo

United opted to bench Ronaldo and start Edinson Cavani against Burnley.

Yet while both players are A-listers who have had fantastic careers, both are beginning to wane.

Cavani hasn’t been the same since Ronaldo’s return and put in a flat display, squandering a glorious chance that cannoned off his knee.

Ronaldo then appeared subdued upon coming on and his strop at full-time, when he stormed off the pitch, speaks volumes about his current state of mind.

United need a younger goal-getter because Ronaldo and Cavani can’t go on forever. Both players have expiry dates – and a top replacement won’t come cheap.
