Manchester United could potentially be set for a reshuffle at right-back this summer when the club are expected to spend big in the transfer market. Aaron Wan-Bissaka, a £50million signing from Crystal Palace in 2019, has lost his way under Ralf Rangnick, who has stuck by Diogo Dalot since replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the Old Trafford dugout.
It’s posed doubts as to who will be the club’s first-choice right-back moving forward and even whether either have long-term futures at United.
Those decisions will ultimately rest with whoever arrives through the door as the new manager but the duo are certainly battling against one another for a place in the side for the rest of the campaign.
Dalot had previously been an outcast under Solskjaer, despite an impressive loan spell at AC Milan but he has since picked up the baton.
The Manchester Evening News believe United could refresh and overhaul their options at full-back this summer and with that in mind, Express Sport analyses four attractive options currently in the shop window…
Tariq Lamptey – Brighton
Lamptey’s recent display at Old Trafford for Brighton was a timely reminder of his quality and with Ralf Rangnick set to move upstairs into a consultancy role, the German could still recommend the Seagulls star to his replacement.
The former Chelsea man is a wonderful contrast to Wan-Bissaka, who loves to prioritise defending, while Lamptey has made a name for himself with his marauding runs up the pitch.
Dalot also likes to get forward and put crosses into the box but Lamptey’s energy allows him to do both sides of the game.
He is also young with a high ceiling, meaning any investment is likely to benefit United in the long run.
Any deal won’t be easy though with Brighton set to demand a mega fee. Tottenham are also understood to be keen.
Max Aarons – Norwich
The Norwich full-back may not get much recognition given he’s part of a relegation-battling defence but he’s earned the chance to test himself at a higher level.
Barcelona and Bayern Munich are among the teams to have taken note of the young England Under-21 international and the Canaries are unlikely to stand in his way should an offer arrive.
Aarons like to attack and excite the crowd, therefore, he would bring something different to the table when compared to United’s two current options.
He is still raw but with the right coaching, he could really elevate his game to the next level.
Noussair Mazraoui – Ajax
The Moroccan is out of contract with Ajax this summer – meaning he could be a real coup for United on a free transfer.
Mazraoui has gone under the radar as one of the most sturdy full-backs in Europe since helping Ajax reaching the Champions League semi-finals in the 2018/19 season.
Barcelona and AC Milan are both circling as they seek to sign the player on a pre-contract agreement.
But should United enter the fray, they would certainly have a chance of winning the race.
At 24, he is the perfect age to continue developing and furthermore, Mazraoui is comfortable in multiple positions.
Matty Cash – Aston Villa
Cash has been one of the most underrated full-backs in the Premier League of recent times but now clubs are starting to take note. So should Man United.
He is well-versed both defensively and in attack and will only get better.
Atletico Madrid have already held talks with his agent over a potential summer deal and if United are looking for a right-back, Cash ticks plenty of boxes.
It’s little wonder why Diego Simeone wants him to replace Kieran Trippier and the Spanish giant’s interest once again reiterates that Cash doesn’t get the props he deserves.
He is dangerous both going forward and strong in defence, something that has been evident since Steve Gerrard’s appointment at Villa Park.
