Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek has opened up on his best position after a successful start to his time at Everton. The Netherlands international sparkled as his side beat Leeds 3-0 on Saturday. And he showed his parent club exactly what they’ve been missing in the process.

Manchester United signed Van de Beek back in the summer transfer window of 2020 after being priced out of a deal for Jack Grealish.

Yet the Netherlands international barely played under both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick, spending the majority of his time stuck on the bench.

United let Van de Beek move to Everton on transfer deadline day, with the midfielder turning down interest from Crystal Palace.

And the 24-year-old has now opened up on his best position, telling the Toffees’ official website: “I think I can play in different positions and I like to play in the Premier League as a number eight, box-to-box.

“The manager wants me to bring some quality with the ball, to link-up in midfield. He expects a lot from me and I expect a lot from myself.

“I am really happy with the first two weeks.

“But now I can make steps.

“I think I can help the team but still there is space for improvement.

“I was sharp, took many balls and made some good decisions on the ball – but I am always critical and always can do better.

“I am happy to play my first game – but it is not about me, it is about winning games for the Club and the team and I am here to help.”

Speaking at the start of the month, meanwhile, United boss Rangnick opened up on his decision to let Van de Beek temporarily leave the club.

“In the end it is a question of competition,” he said.

“He didn’t get enough game time, but that is not to say he is not good enough to play in the Premier League or for Manchester United.

”I am pretty sure he will get the game time at Everton and show what kind of quality player he can be.

“He is a fantastic person.

“In the last nine or ten weeks whilst I have got to know him in person, I am fully aware he is a fantastic team player and I wish him all the very best.”
