United weren’t at their blockbuster best during the Champions League group stages, winning just three of their matches.

However, they were still successful in topping a table also consisting of Villarreal, Atalanta and Young Boys.

United also struggled against Atletico in the first leg, falling behind when Joao Felix got the better of Harry Maguire to head the La Liga giants in front.

Had it not been for Anthony Elanga’s late leveller, this evening’s tie would have a very different complexion to it.

So Express Sport will now take a look at the three players who have a point to prove as they look to make the last eight of a competition that represents their final chance of a trophy this term.

Bruno Fernandes

This season, in the Champions League, Bruno Fernandes is yet to score.

That’s in stark contrast to last term, when he bagged four goals from six appearances in the group stages before they fell into the Europa League.

Fernandes missed the game against Tottenham but has now resumed training and is expected to play a part tonight.

Some have insisted he’s unable to make the difference in the big games, on the grandest stage of all.

So that will give Fernandes more motivation as he looks to inspire United to a memorable victory under the lights.

Alex Telles

Sitting alongside Rangnick for his pre-match press conference was Alex Telles.

The Brazil international has become a more prominent figure at the club this term, having barely been given a chance by Solskjaer.

And with Luke Shaw struggling for consistency, tonight’s showdown with Atletico gives Telles a chance to show he’s an upgrade at left-back.

The former Porto star is a seasoned veteran of this competition and will need to be at his best to keep Atletico’s star-studded attack at bay.

If he comes through the game looking solid and enterprising, Shaw could feasibly find himself battling to regain a starting berth.

Rangnick’s message

Speaking before the match, Rangnick has called on United fans to raise the roof at Old Trafford as they look to qualify for the Champions League quarter-finals.

“These are the nights when we must show our best side and perform to our full potential,” he wrote.

“That also extends to you, the supporters, of course.

“We had a great atmosphere during a big game in our season on Saturday, and we will need the same tonight because it can make a big difference to the players.

“I have stood on the touchline at Old Trafford as the opposition manager when United beat Schalke in the semi-finals in 2011, so I know just how influential the atmosphere here can be.

“Tonight, I hope we can all drive each other on and get ourselves into the last eight.”
