Like most Premier League clubs, United have adopted the policy for players in their 30s.

But De Gea could be one of the first players at Old Trafford to benefit from United’s new approach – meaning he could still pocket a sum in the region of £375,000-a-week.

A new deal would cap a stunning turnaround for the United stalwart, who finished the previous campaign on the bench after a tricky spell.

De Gea put in the work over the summer in a desperate bid to pinch his spot back from Henderson, with the shot-stopper electing to cut short his holidays to cram in extra training ahead of the new season.

And that approach has paid off, with De Gea starting every league game this term for United.
