Manchester City could deal Premier League rivals Liverpool a crushing double blow if they pull off the signing of Erling Haaland this summer. Not only would it see the Sky Blues significantly strengthened, but it may set off a transfer domino effect that would leave the Reds rueing a missed opportunity.
In the absence of a senior frontman, Man City boss Pep Guardiola has been forced to develop a striker-less system.
And it has worked to great effect as the Sky Blues top the table, although Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are not far behind.
While the duo remain closely matched this campaign, a sequence of summer transfer activities could see a shift in the balance of power.
Crucially, City are considered by many to be in pole position for Haaland’s coveted signature, with a £63million release clause set to become active at the end of the season.
With just over one year remaining on his contract at Anfield, the Blaugrana could land Salah for as little as £50m.
Such a fee would be considered a bargain for a star of his goal-scoring calibre, but Liverpool are sure to be more receptive to deals that prevent him moving on to a Premier League rival.
The Reds have had plenty of opportunities to match the 29-year-old’s demands, but reports indicate that wages remain a stumbling block as the speedy winger seeks an adequate reward for his sensational five-year stint.
As such, City landing Haaland could see Liverpool on the wrong end of a devastating one-two combination that may leave them trailing in Guardiola’s wake.
With City potentially boasting one of the most fearsome strikers in Europe and Liverpool at risk of losing their own hot property, the former could be streets ahead of the latter by the time next season gets underway.
It is believed that Guardiola built his striker-less system out of necessity, and would welcome the arrival of an orthodox marksman that could take them up another level.
Of course, Liverpool have attempted to mitigate against such a disastrous sequence of events by rejuvenating their own attack with Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz.
But Salah would be a monumental miss, made all the more painful if their Premier League title rivals pull off one of the summer’s most exciting signings.
