Glenn Hoddle has hailed Diogo Jota as Jurgen Klopp’s ‘best buy’ since the start of his Liverpool tenure in 2015 – overlooking the brilliance that Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane have shown since their moves under the German.
Jota signed from Wolves in September 2020 for a fee of around £41million after two stellar seasons in the Premier League at Molineux.
Having scored 16 goals in 67 top-flight games for the Midlands outfit, he had given himself hero status under Nuno Espirito Santo thanks to his talismanic presence.
Many baulked at the price tag for the Portugal star given that the then-world champions could have bought a more reputable name following their success in the league and Champions League.
But having excelled with 17 goals in just 30 games this season, Hoddle has billed Jota as ‘Klopp’s greatest signing’ – overlooking Salah and Mane’s exploits in the famous red and white.
Jota’s double in Thursday’s win over Leicester rewarded Liverpool with yet another home win and continued to give them a fighting chance in the title race, as they remain nine points behind Manchester City with a game in hand.
But Hoddle praised Jota’s excellent output after yet another superb performance.
“It’s really great instinctive finishing,” he told BT Sport.
“He goes into the box, comes in behind him and he knows. Doesn’t need to take a look – his instincts tell him where the goal is.
Mane too will not be best pleased by Hoddle’s comments; after signing for Liverpool from Southampton in 2016, he has scored 107 goals in 244 games under Klopp, including a goal in the 2018 Champions League final.
Nonetheless, Jota has made the striking spot his own this season after a poor showing from Roberto Firmino last campaign.
But with the signing of Luis Diaz and the emergence of Harvey Elliott, it is now harder than ever to keep a starting berth.
