Florian Wirtz is just 18 years of age, but he has already firmly cemented himself in Bayer Leverkusen’s senior side.

Wirtz joined the club from FC Koln’s youth ranks back in January of 2020, and has since become an instant success.

The teen is a central attacking midfielder by trade, but can also play on the left-wing.

And, during his time with Leverkusen, he has now scored 19 goals and provided 22 assists in 68 outings.

Such fine form at such a young age has seen Wirtz already linked with some top sides, two of whom ply their trade in the Premier League.

Reports stemming from Italy last year claimed that Arsenal were ready to compete with Manchester United for the signing of the wunderkind.

Liverpool eyeing Wirtz

Now, it appears Manchester United are facing yet more competition for the youngster.

As per FourFourTwo citing the Express, Liverpool have sent scouts to Germany in recent months as Jurgen Klopp steps up attempts to sign Bayer Leverkusen starlet Florian Wirtz, described as the “biggest young talent” in the Bundesliga by Hansi Flick.

It is added that Manchester United and Newcastle are also interested in the teenager but it is believed the pulling power of Klopp, and the fact he is so adamant about signing Wirtz, makes Anfield his likeliest destination.

One potential issue for any potential suitor is that Wirtz is now expected to be out until the end of the season due to injury. A big blow for the youngster and one that will hopefully not derail his development into a top-class star.

Should Liverpool end up signing Wirtz, it will be interesting to see how Klopp uses him as the Reds do not operate with an attacking midfielder at present.
