Paris Saint-Germain star Lionel Messi matched an unwanted UEFA Champions League record set by Thierry Henry after his missed penalty against Real Madrid.
Messi endured a frustrating evening in the French capital but was rescued after Kylian Mbappe netted a late winner on Tuesday evening.
The Argentine superstar had a penalty saved by Los Blancos goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois in the second half, which was the fifth miss of his Champions League career.
As a result, Messi has now drawn level with his former Barcelona teammate and Arsenal legend Thierry Henry having missed five penalties in the tournament.
Courtois revealed after the encounter that he did study the Argentine’s penalty-taking before their encounter in Paris.
“In these kinds of games you know that, as a goalkeeper, you’re going to have quite a bit to do,” Courtois told BT Sport.
“I’d studied Messi’s penalties a lot and I tried to play with him when I was on the line. You’ve also got to have that little bit of luck, too.”
