Liverpool restart their Champions League campaign with a last 16 trip to Italy to face defending Serie A champions Inter Milan at the San Siro tonight.

The Reds breezed through the group stage in the first half of the season, as one of three teams with a perfect record, after picking up six wins from six games. Jurgen Klopp’s side will be aiming to keep on track for a possible quadruple this season as they fight across four fronts in 2022.

Klopp is boosted by a fully fit squad for this clash, with Mo Salah and Sadio Mane back from AFCON duty, and January signing Luis Diaz added to their Champions League panel.

Inter boss Simone Inzaghi will be hoping Edin Dzeko can continue his recent goal scoring streak with Alessandro Bastoni returning from injury to boost his defensive options.

Liverpool have faced Inter Milan once before in Champions League action, at the same stage of the competition, back in the 2007/08 season.

Rafa Benitez’s side won 2-0 at Anfield in the first leg, thanks to late goals from Steven Gerrard and Dirk Kuyt, after Marco Materazzi was sent off for two first half bookings.

Roberto Mancini was unable to turn the tie around in the second leg in Milan, with Fernando Torres sealing a 1-0 win for Benitez, as Inter again ended the night with 10 players on the pitch.

2:35 p.m: FORM GUIDES

Liverpool were faultless in the Champions League group stages with 18 points from six games and 17 goals scored.

Klopp’s in-form side have also revived their Premier League title charge in 2022, with five wins and a draw since the turn of the year, to close the gap on Manchester City.

Inter Milan find themselves in a similar situation in Serie A as they look to chase down city rivals AC Milan in their title defence.

However, their inconsistent form has allowed Stefano Pioli’s side to gain an advantage, with Inter winning just two league games from five in 2022.

2:10 p.m: VIDAL AND BASTONI START FOR INTER

Inter boss Simone Inzaghi makes two starting changes from their 1-1 Serie A weekend draw at Napoli with the fit-again Alessandro Bastoni restored to the defence in place of Federico Dimarco.

Veteran midfielder Arturo Vidal comes into midfield with Nicolo Barella out.

Ibrahima Konate replaces Joel Matip at centre back with Thiago Alcantara and Harvey Elliott coming into midfield in place of Naby Keita and skipper Jordan Henderson.

Roberto Firmino drops to the bench with man-of-the-moment Diogo Jota rotating back into the starting XI.
