Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has spoken out about dressing room unrest at the club following their Champions League exit at the hands of Atletico Madrid.
United faced off with the Spanish outfit in the second of two Round of 16 ties on Tuesday.
The scores were level at 1-1 heading into the second leg, but Atletico secured their spot in the quarter-finals by beating United 1-0 at Old Trafford.
Following the game, Maguire was asked if dressing room unrest played a role in their exit from Europe’s most coveted club competition. But the defender insisted there was no unrest:
“There’s no problems in the dressing room,” the United captain said.
“When you play for this club, there’s always reports and lots of media attention. It’s got nothing to do with the result.”
For the goal, a top CB senses the danger of the 2v1 vs Dalot & tracks Koke’s run. Instead Maguire runs back in a straight line into the zone already occupied by Telles??? Leaving Dalot with a 2v1 & Lodi free. This is not related to systems/tactics, just poor defensive instincts. pic.twitter.com/vcp6HiSsUi

Maguire to blame for Manchester United defeat?
Maguire was then asked to elaborate on the performance, which saw United threaten in the first half but grow frustrated and lose control in the second:
“We can do more as a team. We’ve got to do more. We owe it to the club, we owe it to the fans,” Maguire said.
“We have to look at ourselves as players. The lads gave everything, but ultimately, it wasn’t enough. We haven’t been good enough this season.”
Whilst all the blame cannot be put on Maguire, he was largely at fault for Atletico’s goal on Tuesday.
As shown in the two images below, Maguire’s lack of defensive awareness left Diogo Dalot marking two men at the back post, the latter of which was the goalscorer on the day:
