Tottenham may well need to brace themselves for another transfer tug-of-war over Harry Kane following reports that Mauricio Pochettino will urge Manchester United to push to sign the striker, should he be appointed as the club’s next manager. The Paris Saint-Germain boss is believed to be eyeing an Old Trafford reunion with the Spurs superstar, which would leave the north Londoners in need of a replacement.
With each passing day, Pochettino is growing increasingly likely of succeeding current interim Ralf Rangnick in the Old Trafford dugout and taking up the reins on a permanent basis.
Following reports he has emerged as the frontrunner for the role, the Argentine is already believed to be drawing up his transfer wish-list and, according to the Telegraph, Harry Kane will be his top target.
Pep Guardiola’s City failed in their efforts to lure the England captain away from North London last summer as Spurs chairman Daniel Levy remained resolute in his stance that the striker was not for sale.
With City’s rivals from across the Manchester divide potentially set to now test Tottenham’s resolve, Express Sport takes a closer look at the forward options Spurs could consider as Kane’s replacement, should he depart.
Another Serie A striker who may well be tasked with filling the void left by Kane, should he link up with former mentor Pochettino at Old Trafford, is Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez.
The Argentine was heavily linked with a move to Tottenham last summer, but opted to stay put despite seeing strike partner Romelu Lukaku depart for Chelsea.
Martinez is a player Conte knows well from their time together in Milan and the 24-year-old played a crucial role in securing the Nerazzurri’s first league title in 11 years under the Italian last season.
While Kane may well seek a reunion with Pochettino, Martinez could be tempted by the opportunity to work under Conte once more.
Should Pochettino land the Old Trafford job, Anthony Martial could prove to be integral in any deal which would see Kane join him in Manchester.
Tottenham’s admiration for the Frenchman has been well-documented and the north London club failed in their attempts to land the out-of-favour forward on loan as recently as last month.
Martial snubbed Spurs in favour of Sevilla, but having joined on a straight six-month loan with no option to buy, will be returning to the Red Devils at the end of the season.
In order to strike an agreement that would see Kane move to Manchester, United may well look to use the 26-year-old as a makeweight in any potential deal.
Though not necessary an out-and-out striker replacement for Kane, another forward option which could be considered by Spurs is Barcelona’s want-away winger Ousmane Dembele.
The Frenchman has hit the headlines in recent months having rejected the Spanish club’s many offers over a new contract.
The 24-year-old now appears set to depart the Nou Camp for free in the summer after Barca failed in their efforts to shift him in the January transfer window, which reportedly included offering him to Tottenham.
Dembele is believed to be eyeing up a move to the Premier League this summer, with Chelsea his preferred option, though he may be swayed by the fact Spurs will surely be able to offer him more game-time.
Kane’s replacement could even be PSG striker Mauro Icardi – a player who has ironically found minutes hard to come by under fellow countryman Pochettino since his appointment.
Having often found himself behind Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe in the PSG pecking order, the Argentine has regularly been linked with a move away from the French capital.
The former Inter Milan striker was repeatedly linked with Juventus during Fabio Paratici’s time at the club and the Tottenham chief could well try again to secure his services.
However, Conte and Icardi do have a checkered past, with the Italian coach having outcasted the 28-year-old at Inter before handing his shirt number to Lukaku and then promptly offloading him to PSG.
