Panaji: India’s international friendly against Belarus in Bahrain will go ahead as scheduled later this month with Fifa and UEFA, the governing bodies for world and European football, providing the necessary approvals.
According to sources within the All India Football Federation (AIFF), the Football Federation of Belarus has at no point indicated that they won’t be in a position to play the friendly on March 26.
According to Fifa guidelines, a member on whose territory a tier 1 international match is to be played must obtain prior authorisation from Fifa and the confederation to which it is affiliated. Belarus have got both approvals, amid a global sporting boycott of Russia and Belarus for their role in the invasion of Ukraine.
“We have been in daily touch with Fifa over what’s happening in Ukraine and the possible sanctions, but as far as we are concerned, the game is on. We are going to Bahrain to face them. Bahrain is hosting this game and as of now, the game is on,” India coach Igor Stimac told reporters on Monday.
India are scheduled to play Bahrain on March 23 and Belarus on March 26. Belarus, meanwhile, will also face Bahrain on March 29.
The two friendlies are part of India’s preparation for the Asian Cup final round qualifiers in June. Stimac said the two tough matches will provide a sense of how the team is shaping up, ahead of the all-important continental qualifiers.
“We have chosen the opponents carefully. Bahrain is one of the sides which is competitive, it’ll show us where we stand. We’re going to give an opportunity to some of the players who performed well this season and see how they can play on an international stage. We have to see if we can count on them for the qualifiers,” said Stimac.
