Diogo Jota was the main man yet again after a sensational display against Leicester. Liverpool have been locked in negotiations with Mohamed Salah over a new contract but there have been hurdles.

Liverpool might just have another headache on their hands amid their continued contract negotiations with Salah.

The impact that Jota has had at Anfield has surprised everyone – not least the bigwigs upstairs who thought that he would play more of a back-up role to the tremendous trio of Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

But the Portugal international has been a sensation this season, arguably becoming more important than the latter two – while approaching the Egyptian king’s crown as well.

His brace against Leicester takes his total tally for the season to 17 – the same number of Mane and Firmino’s goals combined.

Only Salah has scored more on 23 while the 29-year-old is in the midst of another incredible campaign but there is trouble.

The ex-Chelsea ace has made it clear that he wants to be the best-paid player in the Premier League to reflect his status as a world-class superstar.

That would mean pay parity with Cristiano Ronaldo, who takes home £500,000-a-week at Manchester United, not the kind of dosh Liverpool are used to throwing around.

Salah’s contract expires in 2023 and while there is ample time, the months coming up are crucial to a big decision at Anfield.

If negotiations do not progress at all by the summer, the Reds might be forced to sell their main man or risk losing him for nothing at the end of the season.

Considering his market value at £90m, that would be a huge loss financially – but what about his impact on the pitch?

Obviously without Salah’s goals this season, Liverpool would have kissed goodbye to a title chase a long time ago while the Champions League remains very much up for grabs.

But Jota is proving a gem for Jurgen Klopp, who simply cannot drop him due to his clinical nature in front of goal.

The last month has proved that there is life after Salah – with the forward away with Egypt at AFCON – while the arrival of Luis Diaz will also soften that future blow.

The Colombian looked dynamite against Leicester as well but might take some time before he fully adjusts to life in the Premier League.

Jota needs no such excuse, though, and while his double vs Leicester ended a mini-drought in the Premier League, the nature of his goals suggests that he will always be a reliable source when called upon to lead the line.

The former Wolves star has a penchant for being in the right place at the right time – which is not what Salah might want right now.

That is because the more reliant Liverpool are on the Egyptian, the more likely they would be to cave into his demands.

But as long as Jota is producing the goods, the Reds will be thinking twice before offering up a salary that would be worth £2m-a-month.
