Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo will decide if he stays at the club for another season, claims Gary Neville. Ronaldo scored a stunning hat-trick to lead United to a vital 3-2 win over Tottenham at Old Trafford on Sunday. It was his 59th career hat-trick but just his second in a Red Devils shirt.

Ronaldo returned to United last summer, joining from Juventus.

He signed a two-year contract but has been linked with a move away from the club after just one season.

Despite being United’s leading goalscorer in all competitions with 18 goals, there have been some who claim the presence of Ronaldo has not helped the team progress.

He has been left out of starting XIs on separate occasions by all three managers he has played under this season.

But with another year remaining on his contract, Neville says the club will not have a say in whether he stays put or not.

Neville said on Sky Sports: “There’s this looming decision at the end of the season which everyone I think knows is coming – is Cristiano Ronaldo going to be at Manchester United next season?

“And people are saying ‘will Manchester United keep him?’ – it’s not their gift. Cristiano Ronaldo will make that decision.

“He’s got another year left on his contract, it’s whether he wants to be here. Whether this is the sort of project, that players sometimes like to say, that he believes in and is enjoying it.”

Asked why Ronaldo has so much power over his destiny, Neville said: “I just think his greatness and he wants his career at the end to be enjoyable, he’s demanding.

“He’s demanding, he wants to win every single game. There’s this element of what he can’t do and we’ve contributed to that, I’ve contributed to that in this studio.

“If Manchester United want to be a high-pressing team, with lots of energy up front, he’s probably not your man.

“But he will make the decision to whether he stays at Manchester United next season, not the other way around.”
