Cristiano Ronaldo has been benched for Manchester United‘s Premier League clash with Burnley, just days after turning 37. The Portugal forward has missed out on a place in Ralf Rangnick’s starting line-up, despite the fact the Red Devils are desperate for points as they battle for a top four finish.

Rangnick has instead named Uruguay international Edinson Cavani in his front three and the veteran will spearhead his team’s attack alongside Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford.

Ronaldo has started every Premier League game he has been fit for since Rangnick was appointed in November.

The only league game the superstar forward has missed under the German came last month as United drew 2-2 with Aston Villa.

On that occasion, Ronaldo was not even fit enough to be named on the bench after suffering a hip injury.

United signed Ronaldo for a second time last summer after shelling out £12.8million to prise him away from Juventus.

Those wins have seen the side climb to fourth in the Premier League table and they will be hoping to extend their lead over fifth-placed West Ham when they face the Clarets.

The Hammers are also in action on Tuesday night as they host Watford.

Ronaldo has only scored two goals since Rangnick joined the club. The first of those strikes came in a 1-0 win over Norwich in early December, while the player also notched in a 3-1 win over Burnley at the end of last year.

But he failed to produce the goods on Friday night as he missed a penalty against Middlesbrough in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
