Despite making two very good signings so far this transfer window, Chelsea are very much in danger right now of heading into a new season in a really bad place.
Being thrashed 4-0 by Arsenal at the weekend and Thomas Tuchel’s comments regarding a lack of signings so far and having to use the same failing attackers as last season, really does put Chelsea in a worrying place of turmoil as things stand. It’s clear he was expecting to see more signings by now, and it is clear that this was a direct message to the new Chelsea board to take some quicker affirmative action.
Tuchel knows what he has in his current squad is not enough to challenge on all fronts, and he knows that the club are trying to sign a new centre back before they even turn their attentions to attackers, and he knows that there is just 12 days until a new season starts, putting Chelsea in a precarious position.
Of course, there is plenty of time left in the actual transfer window, but it now looks like it will be a very tough task for Chelsea’s owners to get in the players Tuchel wants before the new season begins, and we all know how important it is to get off to a good start in the Premier League.
There is so much to do, and so many issues – namely spending weeks negotiating to sign Jules Kounde but then losing out to him, which is what now looks likely. Also, the number of players who want to leave yet all of them still currently being at the club with any deals to sell them seemingly being nowhere near close.
It’s a very concerning moment for Chelsea right now, and the lack of planning or operational moves so far this window, is going to put us in a tough position come the start of the season if we do not get on top of it in the next 12 days. Big mess to clean up, little time to do it.
