Chelsea will get punished by Liverpool if they play as open as they did vs Lille – Talk Chelsea

It’s the League Cup final this Sunday and a chance for Thomas Tuchel to win his first major domestic trophy since being in England.

But his Chelsea side have the very tough task of facing Liverpool, who I watched annihilate Leeds United 6-0 this week with absolute ease.

Chelsea played very well themselves this week too in a 2-0 win over Lille in the Champions League. Tuchel’s side looked a lot more fluid, faster, with much more quality than we have seen in recent matches from them, and it was an impressive performance.

However, there were many moments in this game when Chelsea were exposed at the back and a better opposition would have punished them. A better opposition such as Liverpool with the pace and quality they have in their attack, and that is my fear.

Chelsea were very open against Lille and it was very much like a Basketball game on occasions, very end to end. This was fine because we got the two goals and were lucky that Thiago Silva played out of his skin to keep us secure at the back.

But we committed in numbers and the midfield often played high without leaving anyone back. This is fine as long as we win possession back when we go hunting for it, which we did against Lille. But again, a better opposition will play out a lot better and could beat that press at times, meaning once again we could be exposed at the back and lack numbers.

I think this is something Tuchel will need to get on top of for Liverpool, and it might mean starting a midfielder who sits a lot more and doesn’t go dashing off up field over-committing, such as Jorginho. Or play with a more disciplined double pivot.

Tuchel is a top coach and of course he will know this already, but Chelsea will need to be a lot more compact if they are to lift their fourth trophy since Tuchel arrived just over a year ago.
