As make our way towards the halfway mark of the 2021-22 UEFA Champions League season, two legendary clubs will meet in the Round of 16, with hopes of challenging for a championship down the line, as Manchester United and Atletico Madrid meet in the first leg on Wednesday.
After not even making out of the group stage in the Champions League last season, and not qualifying for the UCL in 2019-20, Manchester United is back in the Round of 16 for the first time in three years. They did so by squeaking out defending Europa League champions Villareal, winning Group F by one measly point. ManU is looking to build off the run they have built in Premier League action, and their five-match unbeaten streak in Champions League group play.

Atletico snuck into the Round of 16 for the fourth season in-a-row, as their win in a chippy Group B finale against Porto helped Madrid leap frog over the Portuguese club into second place in the group. The reigining La Liga champs have hopes of moving onto the quarterfinal for the first time since 2020, but will need to show they can step up when it matters most.
This will be just the third-ever match between the two clubs. Their first meeting was during the 1991-92 European Winners Cup, with Atletico winning one match, while drawing with ManU in the other.
