Arsenal’s sale of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has left them extremely short of options up front in the coming months – and his exit could see Gabriel Martinelli make the switch up front, if reports are to be believed.

Aubameyang was dropped from the first-team and stripped of his captaincy at the Emirates after a spate of disciplinary breaches at the club.

His last appearance came on December 6 in a 2-1 loss to Everton, where he spurned an easy chance in the sixth minute of added time to leave his side pointless.

Manager Mikel Arteta was not prepared to give him a chance to redeem himself, resulting in the Gabon star’s departure.

And a report by football.london states that the Brazilian is being crafted to make the striking spot his own.

The report states that Martinelli has been training as a striker in training sessions to fix the club’s short-term and long-term striking crisis.

Speculation has continued over his position, with the Brazilian having taken the left-wing role on the pitch so far this season.

The 20-year-old has made 22 appearances for the Gunners so far this season, scoring four goals and registering three assists in the process.

And Jack Wilshere believes he will go right to the very top amongst Arsenal’s young contingent.

“The one who I really like and think he’s going to be top, is Martinelli,” Wilshere said.

The Gunners didn’t play over the weekend after their fixture against Chelsea was postponed due to the Blues’ involvement in the Club World Cup.

They take on Brentford on Saturday in a bid to keep in the hunt for a top four finish.

And with the Bees having failed to win in the league since January 2, they could capitalise on their poor form with a win.
