Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has entrusted striker Alexandre Lacazette to be his captain until the end of the season, when the Gunners will have to potentially reassess the landscape due to the Frenchman’s expiring contract. The armband had previously been worn by striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang before he was stripped of the captaincy in December by Arteta following a disciplinary breach and the forward has since joined Barcelona on a free transfer.

Now Arteta has elected Lacazette to be his skipper for the remainder of the campaign but further down the line, a fresh decision awaits the Spaniard.

That’s because as things stand, Lacazette is due to leave the club with a return to Lyon potentially on the cards.

Arsenal currently have a leadership group – made up of several members of the squad – to help support the manager and his coaching staff.

Express Sport takes a look at four potential candidates for the Arsenal captaincy for next season when Lacazette departs.

Kieran Tierney

The appointment of Tierney as Arsenal captain would prove to be a popular decision in the dressing room.

Tierney demands 100 per cent commitment for the badge and that is a message that he would relay as skipper.

However, his poor fitness record could potentially be held against him when Arteta comes to make his decision though.

The Scotsman has had several substantial injury lay-offs since arriving from Celtic in the summer of 2019.

Nonetheless, he has the quality and experience to don the armband should Arteta believe he is capable.

Aaron Ramsdale

This would be a slight wildcard option but Arsenal fans have needed no time at all to take to Ramsdale following his arrival from Sheffield United in the summer.

The demanding goalkeeper is always giving his maximum to help the team, barking out instructions from between the sticks.

Furthermore, from his goal, he is able to see the full pitch which allows him to be a leader on the field.

Having only just joined the club, Arsenal would have a leader for years to come.

Gabriel Magalhaes

While Gabriel is not a player that jumps out at you when it comes to leadership, he has made a big impression behind the scenes since arriving from Lille.

There is optimism he will continue to grow into one of the finest centre-backs in the Premier League.

On the field, he has become a player Arsenal can depend upon, who is also central to Arteta’s project.

He has already become Arsenal’s leader in defence and there is now scope for him to become one of their leaders in the dressing room.

Gabriel’s broken English may work against him though, the only negative for the Brazilian.
