Arsenal technical director Edu must ignore any claims to give Alexandre Lacazette a new contract. Arsenal have given big contracts to too many dwindling forces in recent years and handing Lacazette a new deal would be another mistake from the club’s board. The Gunners instead should pursue multiple striker signings this summer.

Lacazette is out of contract at Arsenal at the end of the season.

Eddie Nketiah is also in the same position, though Mikel Arteta is desperate for him to stay.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang left in January, meaning three of Arsenal’s striker options could all leave the club in the space of a few months.

If Nketiah continues to reject a new deal, it would be an easy decision to throw some money at Lacazette to at least have one experienced option up top before any new signings come in.

“I think Nketiah’s on a free as well. Don’t let them both go, certainly with Lacazette, and then have no plan to bring anyone in.”

However, Arsenal have been stung too many times before in handing out new contracts to players of Lacazette’s age.

The striker turns 31 in May, the same age Aubameyang was when he signed his new contract in September 2020.

Aubameyang was not able to hit top form ever since putting pen to paper on that deal.

Mesut Ozil was 29 when he signed his new contract in January 2018 and that saga ended similarly to Aubameyang’s, where he didn’t feature under Arteta for several months and ultimately left the club by mutual consent.

Willian’s free transfer from Chelsea also proved to be a disaster.

Arguably, Aubameyang and perhaps Ozil both deserved their new contracts at the time, even if the decisions have since proven to be bad ones.

But Lacazette’s performances and goal output do not warrant a new deal.

He has never been prolific in an Arsenal shirt but three goals in 17 Premier League appearances this season is not good enough.

Arsenal are linked with a host of strikers, including Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Real Sociedad’s Alexander Isak.

It is time Arsenal moved on from handing out contracts to players who are heading towards the twilight of their careers.

Arsenal must prioritise at least two striker signings this summer and say goodbye to Lacazette after five seasons at the club.
