Alexandre Lacazette appears to have trolled Brentford striker Ivan Toney after the Gunners successfully avenged their opening-day defeat to the Bees, securing a 2-1 victory at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Mikel Arteta’s side have come a long way since the last time they faced this weekend’s opponents, who beat them 2-0 way back in August at the Brentford Community Stadium.

Goals from Sergi Canos and Christian Norgaard did the damage on the night but the Gunners have now had the last laugh after securing another three points towards their top-four challenge.

As for Thomas Frank’s men, they look dangerously close to being dragged into the relegation dogfight.

Hale End boys Emile Smith Rowe and Bukayo Saka scored for the hosts while Norgaard was also on target again for the visitors.

There was a bit of hostility on Arsenal’s behalf heading into the game after they were embarrassed by the newly-promoted side in west London six months ago.

And Lacazette for one, was not forgetting some of the emotions he was faced with in the aftermath of the defeat – despite not playing on the night.

He tweeted: “Nice kick about with the boys. @Arsenal,” accompanied with a football and kissing emoji.

While the post has baffled most Arsenal fans, some supporters have remembered that it’s a reference to Toney’s post after Brentford beat the Gunners.

Last season’s Championship top goalscorer appeared to mock the relative ease of the victory after Arteta’s side failed to lay a glove on Brentford, tweeting the same message.

Toney was missing on Saturday having missed the past few games with injury.

After the game, Arteta admitted his team were using the pain of the first defeat as motivation to get the win.

“That hurts and that scar was there and I certainly felt it and tried to transmit it to the players that we should not forget how we felt after the game and we understood what happened and the results after that,” he said.

“We analysed it with the context that we were in and it was really difficult to prepare for that game.

“The players that we had on that pitch were not the players we had today but we learned a lot as a team.”
