THIERRY HENRY has questioned his ex-Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger for wanting to stage the World Cup every two years.

Fifa are keen to push through the controversial move, which has been criticised by Uefa and several top clubs, before the end of this year.

As quoted by the Associated Press, Henry said: “Do you [FIFA] actually ask the current players what they think about it?

“I played four World Cups and [three] Euros and I came out of them shattered mentally.

“And it’s not about the games I played in it, it’s the preparation for the World Cup, coming back from the World Cup after a season at your club.

“So if you play that every two years, mentally it’s tough for a player.”

Fifa are keen to hold the World Cup every two years from the 2026 tournament in Canada, Mexico and USA.

The plan has been devised by Henry’s old Gunners manager Wenger, who is now Fifa’s Chief of Global Football Development.

The former Premier League coach believes a biennial World Cup will improve the quality and lessen the quantity of international football.

Wenger said in September: “More frequent World Cups mean more opportunities for countries to participate.

“Big players want to play big games. Every player dreams to play in top competitions.

“And it is the repeated travelling of the current schedule that is more detrimental than the number of games.”

Football icons John Terry, Michael Owen, Didier Drogba, Roberto Carlos and Ronaldo have backed the proposal – but others aren’t convinced.

Ajax CEO Edwin van der Sar fumed in September: “The clubs are not having it. It is a ludicrous idea. There is a lot of opposition.”
